Medicare Supplemental Plans

Medicare Supplemental Plans

Medicare Supplemental Plans are designed to work with Original Medicare to fill the gaps not covered by “Original Medicare”. These plans are managed by private insurance companies but do not include Part D coverage.

When an individual chooses a Medicare Supplemental Plan, they are choosing to reduce the potential risk of having large medical expenses in case of an accident or medical diagnosis which would incur more expenses than they are able to cover.  At the same time, they still have the choice to see any doctor or specialist who accepts “Original Medicare”.

Also, when an individual chooses a Medicare Supplemental Plan they continue to pay their Part B premium and pay an additional premium for their Medicare Supplemental Plan.  They then choose one of the CMS approved supplemental plans.

The CMS approved plans are categorized by letter.  The various MediGap plans are listed by letters. They include A,B,C,D,F,G,K,L,M & N.  Also, every MediGap policy must follow federal and state laws designed to protect the customer, and they must be clearly identified as “Medicare Supplement Insurance.” Each insurance company may not offer all the supplemental policies, but they must offer A & F.

Lastly, in regard to payment of medical services, “Original Medicare” remains the primary payee for all billed services or procedures except for Part D where PDP plans are the primary payee.
